IARC Founder and Director

Dr. Syun-Ichi Akasofu is the founding director of the International Arctic Research Center of the University of Alaska Fairbanks and served as director from its establishment in 1998 until February 2007. Dr. Larry Hinzman came on board as deputy director in 2006 and is IARC's current director.

Dr. Akasofu's main contribution (accepted by his field) are his efforts to synthesize and integrate a great variety of project results in formulating the guiding principle. The basic philosophy in founding the International Arctic Research Center is based on the same principle that is described in the following note on Needs for Integration/Synthesis of System Studies in Earth Science.
