Tanana Valley Fair ParticipationEach year in August, IARC volunteers spend a day at the Tanana Valley State Fair at the GI/IARC Fair Booth. Coordinated by the IARC Director's Office, staff, scientists and student volunteers answer questions, hand out informational brochures and pamphlets, and show educational/informationalprograms and demonstrations. They also provide outreach items to the public, relating to the research happening at IARC. A booket kit titled "Studying Global Climate Change in the Arctic" was created for K-12 students. This cooperative effort also had volunteers, and/or information and handouts from the Center for Global Change and the National Weather Service. In 2004, Interior Alaska experienced the worst wildfire season on record. According to the Department of Natural Resources, as of September 8, 2004, 6,385,496 acres had burned. Asst. Professor David Atkinson, 2004 IARC Fair Committee member, prepared a power point demonstration of this timely subject, illustrating the progression of the 2004 Alaska wildfires from MODIS satellite information. Committee members also prepared a handout on the wildfires for the public. Links:
